My car is a 78 L82 350 with factory heads, headers and dual exhaust. Engine was rebuilt about a year ago and was bored .30 over or so I was told by the PO. Has a TH350 with 3.55 gears. Engine is good and very strong.
Currently has a Holley 4175 650 cfm carb on it. I am looking at replacing the intake manifold. Was thinking about putting the Edelbrock 75014 Performer RPM Air Gap manifold on it and reusing the Holley. With this setup I think I can still use the dual snorkel system and have no hood clearance problems. Will I?
I was also wanting to put a Qjet 750 cfm edelbrock carb on top of it. But I have read where this on top of the Edelbrock manifold creates a clearance problem where I would have to use a drop down air cleaner. Correct?
Edelbrock tech support recommended the regular Performer 2101 manifold and a 600 cfm Qjet carb (1406), but couldnt answer the clearance issue.
Power band on the Air Gap manifold is 1500 to 6500 rpm
Power band on the Performer is 0-5500 rpm.
Is anyone else running one of these combos on their 350 and how do they like it?
I had a '78 L82 and installed a Performer series intake with the Q-jet and was very happy with how it ran. The RPM is a higher intake and would likely require a drop base air cleaner, but I have not tried it myself.
What I found with the Performer/Q-Jet combination was that the whole setup was slightly higher than stock, but still caused no hood clearance issues. The intake does set the carburetor back slightly, and the snorkel hoses worked, though the one over the center of the engine was stretched out a bit more than normal due to the carb being set back some.
I would expect an Edelbrock tech to recommend their own products over someone else's, and that's to be expected. The Edelbrock carbs are very good units but if you're happy with your Holley there's no reason to change. If you would consider the 1406 Edelbrock carb, I would suggest the Performer EPS intake instead the 2101 Performer. The EPS is designed specifically for their square bore carburetors and shows better horsepower and torque numbers than the 2101, which is designed for either square- or spread-bore carbs.
BTW - Edelbrock doesn't make Q-Jets anymore. The 1406 is a Performer square-bore carb.

I currently have a 2101 performer intake with a 1406 carb on it. It requires a 1" plastic spacer on top of the carb to fit the stock air cleaner assembly, otherwise the throttle linkage won't clear. Clearance to the hood of my '80 is almost nothing.
Ok, thinking it through since I am having no problems with the Holley, and if I change it I will probably have hood clearance issues I will keep it. Probably put the EPS or stock Performer on it. Thanks for the input. Might go for the Air Gap.
I'm running a Holley SA carb on an EPS intake. I couldn't figure out how to adapt to the original dual snorkel cleaner but I'm not the sharpest tack in the box. Anyways I found that a 3"x14" filter will fit but did have to use a drop base, offset cleaner base to clear the HEI and hood.
