Very good info. On my passenger side, I have slight play as described above and also suspect a worn spindle. I don't have the bearing setup tools or a press so I was looking at getting a rebuilt unit from Bairs. http://www.bairs.com/bearing.asp Has anyone used these before? I'm going to get my local vette shop quoth the work also.
My problem is money right now. I can really only afford to fix those items that really need fixing and/or paint things. My car only has 50K miles and if I can verify that it is the brake shoe then I will fix that. I have no movement other than the normal rotation.
I realize I may have to dis-assemble the rear end again in a couple of years - but time is more abundant than money right now. I will have this car paid off at the end of the summer and then I can get into the more expensive improvements.

I understand fully. My car has 33,000 and my left T/A needs rebuilding. With the tire on and at 12 & 6 o'clock if I push top then bottom there is movement. Enough movement that it need to be rebuilt. I can wait but I'm just going to wreck the spindles. Your's maybe fine, but don't let mileage be your guide. These car have sat for a long time and I beleive that time and weight on those bearings also takes a toll on them. Just make sure there is no movement at 12 & 6 o'clock. Again the noise you are hearing, If I understand you right. I think is brake shoe noise.
