does anyone know if a relay rod from a 68 will interchange with a 75? i've been looking around and i see that some people say 63-67/68-82 and some say 63-68/69-82. so which is it?
but i know that the 68's had the extra hole for the dampener so maybe that is the only reason for the part number change and everything else might be the same?
I do think that the difference in part numbers is the shock damper hole in the relay rod. Shock dampers are really just specially calibrated shock absorbers that are used to eliminate or reduce wheel fight. We could experience wheel fight if the front wheels and suspension went into resonance during certain types of driving. The way we experienced the problem at the GM Proving Grounds was to make a moderate speed, gradual turn on a washboard surface. If you could excite the system into resonance, the steering wheel would rapidly oscillate in your hands. The best (and most expensive) way to manage this problem was to add a shock damper to the relay rod.
Now the C2/C3 chassis and the power and manual steering systems really didn't change much through the years. The things that changed a lot were the tires. I can only guess that the change from bias ply to radials eliminated the need for a shock damper.
I thought the manual relay rod was different than the PS relay rod. Maybe, reading these threads, it's just the damper mounting hole that's the difference.

The end is different. The PS one has a threaded end for the control valve. The manual one does not and just has the stud for the pitman arm.
