I am surprised this topic is still going since the question "Am I missing a step?"
was answered a long time ago- "remove it with a "ridge reamer"."
My grandfather showed me the ridges & the "ridge reamer" when was a little kid before I built my first Hot Rod engine.
First, I would like to thank Tom454 for his help during my rebuild. I think the difference in opinions come from a definition of "professional" engine builder. Some professionals do things to get them done and make their money; most of the time their methods work. Other professionals are more interested in doing it right. The Big 3 make millions of engines a year "professionally", but they don't do a lot of things an aftermarket rebuilder would do. And guess what, thousands of those millions of engines fail every year. Point is, it's probably very possible to remove the pistons without the reamer, but at what cost-both shortterm and longterm. This is just like the harmonic balancer question I had; yes a block of wood and hammer will put the balancer on, but the install tool did it with much less hassle and stress on the engine. The right tool does a better job, period.
I can't argue with a guy that has 7 bays devoted to re and re . The shops I worked for were to busy building engines to do REand RE and if you refer to me as a weekend warrior I feel that I am entitled to call you a YO YO,and yes I taught my daugther the same .....I'II give you the last word, Regards Carmine
L71- Sorry you took it that way.. but I didn't call you a weekend warrior. I just attempted to make it clear to all who are reading that I was not a weekend warrior and that my opinion was rendered based on many years of experience and mountains of engines.
So, I apologize for my lack of foresight. It's tough to always choose the right words, and put them in the right place. I'll be more careful next time.
Edit- Oh, and by the way... I have never done a "RE & RE" job. I personally built all of my engines. But I also did brake, transmission and electrical repairs etc etc. Don't want people to get the wrong impression. I also occasionally did valve & ring jobs for my "needy" neighbors for the cost of parts.
