Default Cam Upgrade Help

Here is my current setup:

350 L-82
4 Speed Manual Transmission
Barry Grant Speed Demon 575 (mechanical secondaries with larger primary and secondary jets)
3.73 Rear Gear
Headers into true dual exhaust
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake
Stock heads
Stock cam

The car is mainly driven on the street. It's an occasional driver. I'm looking for more HP and low end torque.

I'm thinking of going with the Edelbrock Performer RPM heads 64cc (to match the intake)

I'm looking to spend about $1300 on heads and cam kit.

If I go with the RPM heads, What cam would be best for my setup and situation.

Thanks

I would say go with an edelbrock power package, but since you already have an intake just look at which package you like and buy the heads and cam that are used in the package seperately. That way everything matches and works together.

I believe edelbrock's vortec package which is supposed to put out over 400 is a little over $1000 but you would be replacing the intake.

I like the Performer RPM heads but not the Edelbrock Performer RPM cam. I would like some ideas for a cam that would work for my setup with Performer RPM heads. I want to stay with a hydraulic non-roller. Something in the RPM range of 2200 - 6500.

Try this site for some ideas...[url]www.ryanscarpage.50megs.com/combos1.html

Suggestions...stock bottom end...stay under 6000 RPM's, and that 575 carb isn't gonna be enough for modified top end like the one you're talking about...

Here is a link to CompCams online. I'd stay away from the Extreme Energy line for flat tappet use. They have had alot of cam failures for flat tappet use. After my nightmare with the XE268H that failed I went with a Magnum 270H ,I like it so far. Vortec 64cc upgraded heads, Edelbrock RPM Airgap intake and Holley 670.

To get more HP and more low end torque you will need a bigger engine. That is the best way to do that.

Honestly, the stock L-82 cam likes the extra compression and flow of the 64cc Edelbrock heads. Just adding those would give you the pull up to 6500 RPM. 10.4 C/R and that cam will work fine with premium pump gas. You don't have to change the stock grind to do that. I run almost the same setup but have Dart cast iron heads. Not a tire shredder but I do get all the RPM I wanted.

A Comp 286H would get you more top end and about the same bottom end as the stocker is pretty soft as you know. The 270H that 80crabvette runs will run out of breath before 6500 RPM so if you seriously want 6500 RPM you will want to go bigger. The lobe centers are at 110 and you might want something wider for more bottom end.

Theres a Comp 12-564-4 Nitrous cam with wider 113 degree lobe centers that might be fun. You would get more bottom end as compared to the 286H with a little less top end when not on the squeeze. Once the gas was flowing you would have a LOT more.

How fast do you want to go?

-Mark.

Keep the L-82 cam, put in 1.65 ratio roller rockers, and Air Flow Research heads. I ran the L-82 cam with 1.6 ratio rockers and AFR heads for years. I miss that low end torque, and will go to a smaller cam (hydraulic roller) soon. Just my humble opinion. You won't win all of the drag races, but you'll laugh after every red light.
