I have a suspicous snake like hissing sound coming from my center console cluster. I hear the sound when my car is on and for some time after I turn it off. I image it has something to do with the heating and/or AC system. The AC compressor is currently off. I have the center console off right now to replace the lens and thought I'd might as well find out what the hissing is all about. My corvette is a '79 model.
Thanks in advance!!! I know someone can help me :D
I will take a wild stab in the dark here. My 72 has climate controls that are actuated by a series of vacuum lines under the center console at the heater/defroster controls. The lines run forward to the vacuum source and back to the Astro Ventilation. Perhaps the hissing is a broken line and when it goes away your vacuum reservoir is empty. Why not pull your center console up and see if one of your lines is ruptured. Of course, I am assuming that your 79 has some similar controls to my 72.

Pour salt into the console to clear out the Vipers....
then look carefully at the pass side of the HVAC controlls,, you may find a broken plug/line socket, where the vac lines plug in...that and the controll it plugs into may be defective, the plastic tends to warp with age and heat....allready replaced several...same symptom...
careful with that entire assembly that plastic top is easy to break....
I bought new AC control units and they leaked as well. Someone once reported that the control unit can be taken apart and greased up to help prevent leaks.
