Hi Jim from Andrew in Oz, thanks for taking the time to do that, however my colum does not have the shift arm, which i beleive is a slightly different set up, but my question is should the bearing actually sit in the adapter? If this is the case then someone has been screwing around swapping parts or something because the bearing just seems to sit on the lower end of the shaft with no real purpose??? It doesn't fit into any of the components.

Thanks again

Andrew

Andrew,

The bearing is molded into a plastic "bearing adapter". This has a coiuple of bosses or tongues on the outside which slide into notches in the lower end of the column tube. You can see these clearly in Jim's pictures.

Then the retainer is slipped over the bearing which is now inside the column and the big c-clip keeps it all in place.

Is your 77 still LHD and stock or has the column been modified for RHD somehow?

The parts that are in the picture from left to right are as follows:

Clip 7804439
Bearing Adapter Retainer 7804440
Bearing Assembly 7805700
Lower Bearing Adapter 7805822

They are still available through GM dealers and many Corvette suppliers. These parts are the same for all C3 Corvettes from 1969 through 1982. (The spring in the picture is only for 1969 through 1976 columns with shift tubes.)

The bearing is a press fit into the plastic lower bearing adapter.

Hope that this helps,
Jim

Thanks guys for your efforts in helping me to resolve this issue, however i am still completely stumped. There is no way the new bearing that i have (purchased from Ecklers) (which for the record is identical to the old bearing that was on the colum) will fit into the bearing adapter, so either i have the wrong bearing or the wrong adapter or i have no idea what i am doing!!! I believe the bearing to be the correct one, so are there different adapters for different colums or something. Sorry to be painfull, but this is causing me much frustration, as i just can't figure how that bearing sits anywhere.

Forgot to answer Joe's question, the car is still left hand drive, but boy has somebody got into this thing and done some work. There is dodgy stuff everywhere you look.

Andrew,

I have an old 77 column here....and probably an old bearing for comparison. Why don't you give me a call or send me your email adress and we'll sort this out.
