Good Morning,
I forgot to ask you guys if there should be ANY play/movement felt when I check for movement with the tires on and my hands at 6 & 12 o'clock? This includes checking the front also.I am assuming I'll just push with one hand and pull with the other.I need advice on whether I should get a rock solid feel or whether any movement at all is cause for alarm.
I am going to check out a '78 later on this morning. Thanks in advance.

Reason: forgot to ask about front bearings
I changed the rear bearings in my car about five months ago. I decided last night to jack it up and check the play to see how they are holding up. Here's what I found: 12 and 6 o'clock-a little less than 1/4 inch play. 3 and 9 o'clock-hardly any play at all. When I first reassembled my rear bearings, I put a dial indicator on the rotor and I had .002-.004 runout, which I think is OK. I think when you check at 12 and 6, you're feeling the play all the way up to the yokes, not just the bearing play, so a little end play would be normal on a 30 year old car. 3-9 o'clock should be very little end play, just a few thousandths. I hope that's correct, cause I sure don't want to have to replace those rear bearings again. Whew, what a job! Anyway, someone with more knowledge than me about these cars will be along shortly to give a second opinion.
