A Shelby was a pretty slick ride for a 19 year old in 1980. Corvettes were not very cool then. Check out the Earth shoes...bet you young-uns have no idea what those were. It was easier back then to find nice cars to trick out. I bought this one in pieces for $2200 and rebuilt it totally myself..all with my hard earned $$$. Thats what it takes. I do sympathize with you young guys today...its so much harder.

I bought my C3's back in the late 70's early 80's and they were pretty cool around here. They were also a "dime a dozen" then; 68's and 69's everywhere you looked for $2,500-$3,500 and mostly original, big blocks were less most times because of the 2nd gas rip off in'79. Gee, which #gas rip off did we just get out of ??? :mad

I'm 16 and work for my vette. I have to pay monthly payments, but my parents pay all the intrest and they help me out every once in awhile. Plus they pay for all the insurance.
I know several kids that their parents pay for the car, insurance, and everything. Amazingly enough, once I get my license, I will be the only one drivin a vette at my school. Most kids are driving a 95 and up camaro, firebird, or a mustang.

my step-dad got his when I was negative 3 years old. I saw it for the first time when I was 3 and fell in love with it. Lucky for me he had kept it until I turned 16, however he never drove it, and age took its tole. He gave it to me instead of selling it....he pays the insurance, and gas, I pay the mods and "resto" items. I still think he's getting the better end of the deal. :jester

Pretty easy for me. I live at home with my parents. I work full time and will be starting school next Spring. The C3's are a much better deal than many of the new cars today. I see kids driving $30,000 Mustang Cobra's and I wonder to myself "How in the hell could somebodies parents be that irresponsible?" (I'm talking 16-18 year olds still in HS.) If you're in HS and you have a car like that you're going to get into trouble with it unless you're one of the 2% of smart drivers in that age range. I get the same expression from other people though when they see me driving my Corvette. That "Look at what your daddy bought you!" look. People say that to me and I tell them I'm paying every last cent of it. They never believe me though. And that's fine by me. If I was still 16 then I'd probably care. But I matured faster than most kids do. And I think all the young C3 owners here are like me. Matured beyond their age.

Corvettes were not very cool then
Isn't that an oxymoron (to mention Corvettes and not cool in the same sentence). Corvettes have always been cool :D

I'm 22 and my 'Vette is a basketcase, so it wasn't too pricey. Sounds like I have one of the only undrivable 'Vettes out there, currently it is a frame sitting in my parents garage, I'm halfway through the body off resto. Since it needed loads of work I was able to afford it, and we have lots of tools so I'll be able to do most of the frame work myself. I wish interiors didn't cost so much...but that's just extra weight, right?

Bence... obviously no disrespect intended..I do own one you know :D ... but in the mid/late '70s, Corvettes were not in vogue (particularly with young hot rodders) due to the abundance of affordable late '60s muscle cars with BIG motors and no smog stuff. Our high school had three distinct groups-Chevy/GM, Ford & Mopar. Heres a quick list of cars....and most could be had for $1000-$2000!! :cry

'69 Camaro SS 396, 4spd
'70 Chevelle SS 396, 4spd
'68 4-4-2, 455, 4spd
'72 Nova SS, 350, 4spd
'72 & '73 Vegas, 350, 4spd
'57 Chevy P/U, 350, TH350
'73 Trans Am SD455

'69 Boss 302, 4spd
'68 Mustang GT 390, 4spd
'70 Boss 429

'68 Coronet Super Bee 383
'70 Charger 383
Pair of Superbirds, both 440s, '69 or '70s I think
'69 GTX
'70 Cuda 340

Those were the good old days....and as you probably can gather, there was ALOT of street racing.
