Distributors

I have a 73-350 and I need to pull the distributor to install electronic ignition. I have never done this, and it kinda worries me. Can I expect any problems reinstalling it?

I have done this probably a hundred times now. Iwould not even think of doing any work while it is in the car. Just make a diagram of the way the dist is pointing and where the rotor is pointing and then pull it. The rotor will turn as it comes out. Make a note of where the rotor is when it is out. Reinstall it in exactly the same position and make sure the wires are correctly installled. 18436572 is the firing order. Take a picture if you are not sure of yourself. It really is an easy task. Even if you mess it up it is no big probelm to get it back in the correct way.

you'll have to change the wire ends at the distributor to hei style, or change the entire wire.

I replaced my stock '71 distributor and ignition with an MSD Pro-Billet Corvette distributor with a mechanical tack drive connection, an MSD blaster coil and an MSD Digital 6AL programmable ignition module. Couldn't be more happy with it. If you are going to change out the original set-up you might as well do it right. HEI stinks and your stock tach won't work after the swap.

hi! i have a new distributor that i am trying to install and my question is---when i drop the dis. in does it go all the way down to the top of the flange (where the gasket is) or does it stay above the top of the manifold? i can't make it go down flush.---thanks---john

the flange should set on the gasket something is not correct there is a tang on the end of the shaft that fit on the end of the oil pump shaft there is slot that has to align or it wont seat get flash light an look into the block where the dist goes and ck the end of the oil pump shaft to see where it is pointing it should point at #1 piston as does the rotor the #1 piston needs to be up on compression stroke you can do this with a finger over plug hole and use a remote starter and feel the air being pushed out then ck your harmonic balener for how close it is to 0 turn crank to align that up and reinstall dist with rotor and oil pump slot pointing #1 it may take a few tries to get just right
