The engine was rebuild about A year and a half ago. The car was not driven hardly at all just an occasional starting. I have been driving it more lately and now the rear main is drippping. I did check and it is not the oil pan gasket or tranny fluid from the convertor seal. I know th oil pan is easy to remove what I am curious how is the best way to remove the top portion of the old bearing seal? It's A 77 350 engine. Thanks.
I use the wooden handle of a paint brush. They are long, thin, and wooden. They're stiff enough to push the old out out enough to get some needle nose on it, yet won't harm anything if it slips off.
As I've suggested many times, go with the Fel-Pro one piece pan gasket as they are fantastic. A little more $ but well worth it, IMO. Good luck with the project.

Push with a tye wrap.
Tye wrap. Yep just get it started either side ad pull the other end with a needle nose.
When i roll the new 2-piece seal in i leave it off center/off-set so where the seals meet it don't line up with the main cap parting line. Just follow the FelPro directions and practice rolling it in the main cap a few times before installing.

Hope this helps,

cardo0 What you are telling me about center off-set do you mean when I insert the new seal that part of the bottom bearing cap seal will slide into the block half and visa versa? The last time I done A rear main seal in another life they were the old rope seal. So now days they are rubber and pre cut to length? I see from the parts store web sites that there is possibly two diferent seals. I guess soon I will find out which one I have. Thanks for the help and advice.
Mine leaked after I did a rebuild. Pulled the pan and replaced with a Felpro. Also replaced the four piece pan gasket with a one piece. No more problems.
Also here is a message I got from rastadr about oil pan gaskets. He never used a pan gasket. Immaculately clean srrface, acetone and a nice bead of silicone. Never a leake yet. Something to think about.
