Default BB DIPSTICK LENGTH for stupid?

Does anyone know the correct length of the oil dipstick and the dipstick tube for a 1968 427?

In the past after purchasing a new/used car the first thing I do is change the oil. The previous owner of this car had just had it serviced, so I just drove it. I did add a couple of quarts along the way and decided it was time to do an oil change. When I drained the oil I was shocked to see only a small amount came out. (A little over half gallon) I looked to see if the drian was stopped up and that the pan was empty. I put five quarts of new oil in and checked it at the dipstick. The stick showed it was way over full. I added 3/4 of a 6th quart to fill the new filter and after running the car made a new mark on the stick. Hope that is the correct level. Can't believe I've been riding around on 3 quarts of oil. (Stupid ! Stupid ! stupid,.!!/?!!)

The oil stick length is 18 3/4" from the end of the stick to where it seats of the tube. The tube is 13" from where the stick seat to the tube on the side of the oil pan.
