Default Shifter Shaft Seals

Time to replace the shifter shaft seals on my 78 4 speed. I have a few questions. First, is it best to remove the side cover or try to replace them on the car? Second, any things to look out for when doing the reverse shaft seal? I understand it can be a bit tricky…

I think it is easier to remove and install them with the cover off, you'll need a new cover gasket too. I do not recall the reverse seal being any different than the other two seals.

You might want to contact http://www.5speeds.com/index.html as it might be possible to do the job w/o removing the plate. It's worth a shot as it should save a lot of time if it can be done that way. The owner has helped me in the past and is a member of the Forum. Great guy.
