Is the filter can (black plastic) that's in the vacuum line from the power booster to the manifold required, or can I loose it? Also does this line have to be steel line/pipe as it was stock or will tubing/hose suffice?

Yes, it is required and is actually supposed to be changed out annually (doh!). It keeps your diaphragm from being damaged by contaminants which may otherwise (somehow) migrate into the booster. They're available thru many sources, including the General.

You need to keep the charcoal filter as theskunkworks says. It absorbs fuel vapor from the manifold that can destroy the booster diaphragm. It needs to be mounted vertical to work correctly which is why the steel tube. If you fab up a bracket to hold it vertical I'm sure rubber hose will do. GM had a BIG recall back in the 70's to add this gizmo because of booster failures.
