Got a '73, 350, mild cam, heads are worked with heavier springs, etc., HEI ignition and headers. I've tried using a good set of Bosch wires but they aren't holding up under the heat of the headers. Any suggestions or favorites?
Note that ignition leads are generally supplied with a high temp resistant rubber for the plug end only. If you put the lead the wrong way on, the (dizzy end) boot insulation will be destroyed very rapidly.
You need to route your leads with plenty of air gap from the headers... If a lead is in contact with the header, you will have ongoing problems. You could try some lead heat insulation socks, but if you have no clearance, they will fail also.
Get some decent lead seperators also, anchored to provide good clearance from the headers and maintain a gap between leads too.
I bought a roll of MSD wire and boots and made my own. I used Moroso valve cover clips for holding them. They have been on the car for 6 years with no sign of any burns or hot spots.
I have the custom fit MSD wire and Moroso separators- no problems. Summit also sells the insulated boots to cover the wire ends at the headers, if you need them.
