And yes, I have a pretty damn good machine shop right down the street from me, they pressed all of my bushings for me (which REALLY sucked, lol $$$) so I WILL be buying used heads, DB. Thanks for that bit.
PM me your zip code and I will see if I can help you find a set of heads close to you.
Right now on NastyZ28.com there is a pair in the swap meet section with about 2000 miles on them.
Dart Iron Eagles
200cc/72cc
Drilled for steam holes
2.05/1.60
Guideplates and screw in studs............$500 and shipping
If interested I can help you get those, I am a member of the site, but have nothing to do with the heads.
The Edelbrock performer cam sucks, and I wouldn't be too concerned about needing aluminum heads. Man, I haven't hear the words Crane Fireball for about 20 years!
I take it the Performer intake is a non Vortec intake. Look at Summit's house brand 67cc non Vortec cast iron heads if you are on a budget, $585 and you won't need to spend another $250-$300 on new heads to have them refurbished like you will with used heads.
You don't want to get crazy with a cam that will be too big for this little motor. The GM "151" cam would be a nice little cam or the Sum K-1103 DB mentioned would be fine as well.
Good Luck,
Scott
Ok, now to ask a REALLY dumb question here....how do I know if an intake is vortec or not? I looked all over summit, and it didn't show anything in the description that said Vortec.
Vortec heads/intakes only use 4 bolts per side, 2 on each end. There are NO center bolt holes. Also, bolt angle is much different. Once you've seen the difference, it'll be easy to recognize.
USA 50 states only.
Have 4 sale a VERY nice pr of L98/ZZ4 heads that need NOTHING but a new home. If SERIOUS ... SERIOUS ... email (NOT pm) email thru this forum.
add:
stock L48 w/ZZ4 heads, w/ GM 10105117 gasket, piston volume corrected for chamfer & land ... scr ~ 9.67:1
I'm a huge fan of the Vortec head and intake swap.
The heads can be had cheap from a salvage yard, and a machine shop would only need a few hundred for the minor work you'd want to do. Then a cam and lifter combo from Summit for less than $100, a Vortec manifold for a little over $100, and assuming you don't need or care about the EGR, you'd have about 9.5:1 and around 300 HP at the wheels.
There are some other minor details, but you can effectively do the Vortec swap for around $1000.
Even if you can find good early heads they will cost more by the time you get a valve job and probably don't have hardened seats, which will cost even more. I had a set of heads done for a customer 68 327 Camaro resto about 5 years ago and had over $600 in his heads with a set of guides and hardened seats, new springs, 8 or so valves. If you can find a deal the L98 heads are an OK option, but they don't flow like Vortecs.
With all the US built stuff, iron heads or alum. SD has the Vortec's for 600 a pair and Edlelbrock, Iron, Trick and alike, you would think we would buy US.
Although my family has been buying Italian Bread for two generations, dose that count as buying off-shore?
Mike Panebianco.
I have used more than a few Professional Product intake manifolds, for both GM and Mopar. They are actually very well made, seemingly very good quality aluminum, and the casting is great. Inside the runners are not all rough and edgy, and they offer features like dual bolt patterns for old and new engines so the same intake will work on two different styles of intake bolt patterns. Not to mention multiple carb bolt patterns. I saved a lot of money by buying them, and I have been very happy with them.
I would look at elgin cams good grinds and a set of patriot heads 795.00 for the freedom ck out a patriot.com at leasr they were the last time I looked at the site and there made in the USA

Well, when an individual doesn't have a real job, and doesn't give a crap about the future of this country, then I guess it makes sense to buy Chinese crap, rather than the Original Edelbrock stuff it was pirated from. Edelbrock might be $20 or $50 more expensive, and that would cut into fast food and bar purchases.
I did not mention any names, so will I be banned for this post??
