I about to get rid of the Mallory unilite because I need something with a vacuum advance. I know the MSDs are good, but you got to get the box to go with it. How much extra wiring is it?? is another tach drive distributor with a vacuum advance that i can just plug in, set, and go? This is for a built 383.
I have a '70 SB and use a HEI tach drive distributor with vacuum advance. Have used it for 5+ years with no problems. I believe the company is Star Distributors in the Midwest. Price About $175.
MSD makes a HEI replacement, the Street Fire about $160. Summit also has a house brand HEI for less than $90 and Pertronix makes a nice HEI replacement. None of those require additional boxes that I am aware of.

Sorry, I totally missed the part about needing a tach drive. Those do not have tach drives, but there are a couple other tach drive HEI distributors such as the one you are using on the market besides the MSD billet one. Summit SUM-850001-T for $250.
Check Ebay, HEI tach drives for less than $125. Couldn't tell you if they are any good or not.

thanks guys..I may go with the HEI unit...looks pretty decent getting ready of the coil, but i'd have to get new wires.
I do not have the stock distributor to rebuild or put a pertronix in....
I have a recently rebuilt stock tach drive distributor with the high performance shaft that was new and all new bushings and the crane xri electronic module ($69.95 summit). The end play was set at .003 and has real light springs in it so that all of the advance is in by 2,000 rpm and can be changed to slow down the advance to around 2,500, as i have built a new distributor and had it on a sun machine and know that with the springs i have, when the total advance will be all in. email me if any body is interested,
I used my original tach drive dist with Pertronix innards and coil. Looks stock. Works great. Big improvement over stock.
I made over 440HP in a 355 motor with a stock Delco cast iron TD with Pertronix set-up. I would look into the Crane points replacement kit with a built-in rev limiter also as it is reasonably priced.
