Hey does anyone know which tool i need 2 remove the gauge bezel to take out my radio? a few of my screws are stripped. I cant figure out what to use. anyone got any ideas or solutions.
The bezel is screwed in the dash with five normal screws: one on top, one on each side and two connecting it to the shifterconsole. The allen head like screws are show only, it's one piece.
my 78 has phillips head screws. Sometimes you can try different screwdrivers and have success or Craftsman at Sears has phillips head screw removal bits that bite into it and remove them.
If the dash pad is stripped out and the screws only turn, take a ice pick and try to get it under the head. Then with the other hand turn the screw out. When you do this the ice pick will pick up on a thread and should pull the screw out.
To repair the dash pad, find you some “Plastic Fusion” or “Plastic weld”. These are both available at your local Flaps, Wally world, or just about any hardware store. This is a two part epoxy that is great for repairing just about any ABS or plastic part! It can also be used to repair tabs on shift console plates, defroster grilles, and just about any other plastic part you can think of. Once dry, it can be formed, sanded, and even painted if needed.
Mix it up and force it in the hole and allow 24 hours to dry. Once dry, re-drill a pilot hole and then re-insert your screw.
The screws on all corvettes from 1968-1982 were standard Phillips head and should not be Allen screws.
You're not talking about the individual allen head screws around each guage are you?
The reason I ask is because when I was about 20 years old, I wanted to put a new stereo in the '77 that I had back then. The first thing I did was take an allen wrench to these little screw heads that turned out to be decorative plastic for the big bezel. I stripped out about 3 of them before I finally "made the connection".
The piece that should come out is one big cover that houses all you guages, clock, etc. Be careful pulling on it, because if I remember right, there is a very thin weak spot on each side that bends and/or breaks pretty easily.
At least that is the way on my '77. I don't know about a '78.
