When vacuum goes away, the spring lifts the piston/rod to its smaller diameter causing a richer condition.

So figure out the existing area of your two stepped rod and the area of your jet. So if you are rich you can look through the rod and jet chart and make very fine adjustments when you do the math for area of flow for both cruise and under power.

I replaced my Vettes 1411 after ten years of extreme heat and abuse. The venturi wall cracked and flooded my motor
The WOT jet (secondary jet) I used was the one that gave me 4% rich (can't remember the # on the jet) and it was almost dead on 14 to 15 on the A/F meter. It also ran like it was dead on. It was the main jets for cruising/power that I could not get right. I literally tried every single combo on Edelbrok’s chart. I started in the center of the chart and when that was not even close I just started trying all of them for the heck of it. I can't how many plugs I went through. Again it may be a sim. situation that you have that there may be something wrong with the carb. I am going to completely tear down the carb and rebuild it, but I want to get the car running first because we are having great weather right now.

I made the wrong assumption that it was new 1411 and you couldn't get it going.

My 1411 looks perfect because you can't really see the hair line crack. the aluminum casting just gave out from many years of heat expansion cycles.

I removed the choke and had a few other mods like the 90 degree fuel inlet

11Jake.... Interesting that you appear to be happy with AFR of 14 to 15

IMO that is extremely lean?

My afr's are set to 12.5~12.8 which I consider a safe street tune.

Maybe that's why I'm down from claimed power ?

ps, sorry about thread stealing .... :o

Close to 14.7 is perfect for cruising down the freeway. Max power at WOT should drop to near 12.2

Ozzy Tom if you are running 12.5 12.8 you are so rich that you are almost off the readding on my A/F meter. 14.7 readding is exactly what gkull said, good for cruising and you want a little richer when WOT.

My values of 12.5~12.8 across the rev band, are under WOT on the dyno, not cruising.

I am assuming your quote of AFR ~ 14.7 is whilst cruising, NOT at WOT .... correct?
In which case that's fine. My misunderstanding.

cheers

Update:
I installed the Holley this weekend. What a HUGE difference over the Edelbrock carb. I haven't even fine tuned the holley carb. and it outperforms the edelbrock. Without fine tuning the carb it is really close to 14.7 reading on my A/F meter, running just a little rich right know. It idles smoother and runs great a WOT. Only problem I have is the Holley carb. does not have a option to hookup the hose for the PCV. I installed a fitting in the aircleaner but it is not pulling enough vacuum at idle on the PCV valve and it has a slight odor. Anyone else have this problem? If so what was your fix?
