Default found a sheared bolt... Intake manifold !!!

Hey all,
I began my tare down of my engine tonight, and to my supreme surprise i found a bolt with a sheared head on the intake manifold. It is the bolt connecting the smog pump bracket to the manifold, which i assume goes through to the block. I got everything off, and then couldn't lift the intake off. I saw what looked like a clump of dirt, moved it aside, and found a bolt sans its head. So here is the question, are there any "easy outs" that can be used with a socket, or am i going to be borrowing the gear head drill from work tomorrow. thanks,
Steve

Whatever you do I suggest some WD 40 or PB Blaster tonight to let it soak for ease of removal. And I'd try the easyout. Dont wanna screw up the threads

If this is one of the front two or last two bolts on either side holding the intake to the heads it is probably seized to the aluminum manifold. Some sort of chemical reaction between the aluminum and steel bolt that's threaded into the water passage. If you can pry the manifold off, breaking the bond at the hole, the bolt should unscrew easily with a pair of vicegrips. If it's seized like i think, an easyout won't do it.

If you are tearing the heads off also, I would losen and remove the off side head next. With the head off the intake should be able to slide off exposing the broken bolt. Will certainly be easier to remove the bolt with the intake off. Good luck on your teaar down, I just went through that llast weekend.

I just went through the same thing. Mine was the last rear intake bolt, passenger side. You do need to get the intake off. If it's just a stud going through it with no head, it should come off. I tried wd 40 and vice grips on mine with no luck. Finally I soaked it for two days with pb blaster, then bought the bolt/stud remover kit they sell at autozone. It comes in a pack of 4-5. They fit on a ratchet, look similar to a socket, but have sharp edges that grab the stud. This tool actually worked, and on the first try. Once I twisted it down on the broken stud, it grabbed and out it came. Good luck.

unfortunately its sheared off flush with the intake. So it isnt threaded into the intake?

No. Like I said, it's seized to the intake manifold. Carefully pry the manifold from the opposite side and it should break free.

It's threaded into the head. I would just gently work the intake until it breaks free. If it broke off flush with the top of the intake, you should have plenty of stud sticking up to work with, once you get the intake off. Take your time, soak it good with pb blaster, and don't rush it. Good luck.
