I tried rebuilding mine a few years ago and it was an original. I ordered the rebuild kit from a vette vender and after I got it off it wouldn't come apart to replace plunger seals. I bought a whole cylinder and replaced the old one including rebuilt valve. Hope your's comes apart. Steve

I have done three of them and never had any trouble getting them apart. Back together properly is another story.
My advise is to lock yourself in a quiet room where you wont be distracted. Take it apart and lay the parts down in the order you remove them, then reverse to put it back together. There are only a few washers/spacers in addition to the kit parts inside the thing . If you get some of them wrong it will let you know once you have it back on the car.
Just pay attention to the order and you should have no problems. The first one I did, I had an old friend stop by just as I got started. I went to the john and came back to find him with some of the pieces in his hand. It took me five times to get it back right. The last two were much easier and I even did the last one with out removing the valve body from the car. That is a bit more difficult to do because alignment gets tricky but it can be done.

same here. sell what you have and get a rebuilt with your old one as a trade in.
I also bought the rebuild kit and it didn't go so well. HONESTLY, I didn't have the right tools for the job. It was 10X easier to just order a new one from eBay and send mine back as a core.
Thanks for the feedback, the cost of the rebuild kit is not bad. I found this : http://www.mamotorworks.com/corvette?frame=4.3861
The cost of a rebuilt one is $239 from VBP
Think I'll try changing the seals first. Just ordered the kit I'll let you know how it goes
Yep definitely try the rebuild first
The rebuilt valve I bought from VBP was $129 w/exchange, plus they knocked another $13 off because I'm a Forum member
I bought my kit from Zip for under $20.00. It was relatively easy and straight forward. I rebuilt it last year and have never had a problem with it since and it works perfectly. It's certainly cheap enough and worth trying.
