Used QJet first startup problems
I recently purchased a used Qjet. Supposed to have come off of a running engine. Was in a large sealed bag when I got it. It stayed that way for about 3 weeks while I put on the new intake. Last night I installed it and hooked everything up. I fired up the car and it immediately revved up to 2k and then worked up to 3k rpms. I tightened the throttle return springs to make sure throttle was returning fully. I made sure the idle screw was far enough back to ensure it wasn't keeping the engine turning that high. I advanced/retarded the distributor a little bit, but nothing could stop it from running at that RPM. After several attempts the choke block off plate was starting to open, but I had to quit for the night.
I could use some guidance on where to start looking for the problem.
Oh, one other thing, after running the car for a bit, the black gasket that sticks out between the top plate of the carb and the main body appeared damp.

I purchased the Rochester Carb books by Cliff Ruggles and Doug Roe right after I bought the carb. I'm still not sure if I think I can do the carb rebuild or not. I haven't read the books completely, more like skimmed through them. I also contacted Lars about his pricing. Looks like I might need to contact him about when he can fit mine in.

I used Doug Roe's book to rebuild my Q-jet and it came out fine, much to my amazement I might add. However, since you know nothing about the history of your carb, it might be better to have Lars look at it.

I would just send it to Lars. Someone else may have had it apart and not put it back together correctly, or with the correct parts. You could spend a lot of time tearing your hair out over this. Lars checks this stuff as a part of his rebuild process, so what you get back will be correct. It's well worth much more than he charges.
Not sure if your choke was off or not.
There is an adjustment screw (passenger side) in amoungst the choke mechanism that you can turn the choke fast idle down with.
If the choke was fully off - then you have a vacuum leak. Either at the intake manifold or past the primaries or secondaries. - Were they open ?
Your Husky has "snow nose". So does mine. Comes and goes with the seasons. What's his or her name? How old? Mine will be seven this month and her name is Kiska. She weighs 65 lbs. and is 24.5" at the withers.
I'm going to speak to Ak. Mal in Husky now. Woooooo! Woooooo! Woooooo!

I'll check the choke settings to see if everything is working. The numbers on the base of the carb works out as a 1976 Corvette. It has an electric choke, which I thought wasn't original for that year, but had to have been converted. I'm looking in one of my books and it makes reference to a screw on the choke pull-off that adjusts the angle of the choke-flap. I'll try to work with that, and I know that you can adjust the choke by rotating the black cover on the choke housing.
RagTop69 - Who would have guessed one sound could mean: I'm hungry, feed me now, let me outside and Hot Damn...let's play!! That's Molly in my avatar. She's an Alaskan Malamute and turns 8 on Sunday. I had only had her for a few months before registering here....that's where my username came from. She got her snow nose her first winter and it never went away.
Here is some useless trivia...(true or not ????) George Lucas grew up always having Malamutes in the household. That is the inspiration for the sounds Chewbacca makes in the Star Wars movies.
