I'm about to purchase new clutch for my '68. I've never used an aftermarket clutch, so I don't know much about them. Should I stay with GM parts or get a Hays, Centerforce, etc. Engine is a 427/390 (with mods planned in the near future), and transmission will be a Richmond 5-speed that requires a 26 spline input.
What size flywheel and clutch does my car have stock, and how many teeth are on the flywheel?
Flareside, Chris is right about clutch size, although you should check the # on the bellhousing to be sure. I can research what # is for 11" and which is for 10&1/2"
I have same engine as you in a '69. I went with a GM heavy duty clutch from Sallee Chevrolet.I have no complaints with it and it is abused regularly. Pedal effort not bad at all.
I just installed a Centerforce DUal Friction based on the recommendations of Forum members. This is a great clutch. My 427 turns 500 lbs. ft. of torque at 2700 rpm and over 450 hp at 5500 rpm and the clutch grabs great, even when I open the secondaries in first gear. I highly recommend it.
I think the pedal effort is about the same as what was in my car (probably not original), but it was also about 9 mo between when I put in the new clutch and the other stuff.
I have a freind that is a SPEC dealer they are a real performance style type clutch they are high quality so if you would like more info on these clutches let me know and ill give you his E-MAIL ADDRESS
