Default Jets and Rods

Need to establish a base line.

I have a Carter AFB model 9635 on a 72, 355 cuber, 4 speed. Cam, headers, etc. Am having a hard time with the Primary Jets and Metering rods. Plugs are R44T, as suggested by Chevrolet. Plugs are quite black and sometimes slightly wet.

When Idleing, smells rich (burns your eyes), but no smoke. Does run rather well though. Doesn't ping, doesn't run on when shut off, starts good. Fuel mileage is poor at best, I know it can do better.

Having a hard time finding information as to what Primary jet and Metering rod to start with. Presently I have a #120-400 primary jet and a #7147 rod. Good carb but very hard to find info on. The Carter book I have really doesn't give you good info on a starting point.

The Edelbrock 1400 series is a knockoff of the Carter. You may be able to find something there.

You can go online to Edelbrock and they have a Carb Owners Manual that you can down load. Part numbers are different but the rod/jet/spring values are almost identical to Carter's old strip kit hardware. I also have the FM/Carter AFB Tuning.pdf file. It's very similar but with Carter part #'s. Also I still have the carb info that came with one of my 9635's floating around somewhere that identifies what jets/rods/springs etc were installed originally.

Both Edelbrock and Carter info describe tuning tips to dial in better performance and drivability. I have a 600 on a '59 283 with 30/30 type cam that needed the power piston springs changed for better drivability after changing jets/rods.

If you can find the the manual with the original info I'd greatly appreciate you passing this on to me. This would give me my baseline.

Thanks

Let's see if this posts correctly. Copied text from file.

Listed below are the base calibrations of the AFB you
have just purchased. Also listed are the dimensions of
the rods, jets and spring's that calibrate your AFB.

These components are sold as replacement parts, 16P
- numbers for rods, 120P - numbers for jets, 61 P-
1083 and 61 P-1 085 for springs. The rod and jet parts
are sold in pairs. The springs are sold in kits consisting
of 3 or 5 pairs of springs.

Carters 10-201 strip kit contains an assortment of those
rods and jets listed as well as 2 different needle seat
assemblies.

The chart on the following page is a guide for making
changes in rods and jets that allow you to tune your
AFB.

Hey Gasket Dude - Thanks again for the info. Motor runs nice and a noticable difference in fuel mileage. No more black sutt on the bumpers.

BTW, used the baseline info and that's the cure.

Thanks man
