Default 68 Big Block Differential ID ?

How can you tell if the differential on a 68 Corvette is for the 427 cu in engines? Also, where are the ID numbers located?

The code will be stamped in bottom flange. There were several codes used for 427s. Here are the codes:

Other then the HD side yokes there's no difference to them except the stamping.

What do the HD side yokes look like? Also, by the bottom flange, do you mean where the drive shaft comes into the jackpot?

The HD side yokes have bolt on caps for the u-joints. The small block vettes had straps that went on top of the u-joint cap and were held with two nuts at the back of the yoke.

Do bolt-on caps always mean HD yokes? My 75 has bolt-ons and it is the low perf engine.

Unless I've missed it, your '75 has the HD yokes. Apparently that was the last year they were available. There may have been a production line change after the diff was in, or maybe they just used up the parts which were being phased out and you got lucky.

The HD yokes were used on BB, SHP SB's as well as base motor automatics. So just about everything except for the base motor 4 spd's.
My original 72 350-200 TH400 has them.

I came across this photo which may be useful to some folks for identification purposes.

I did not know that. I would have thought base motor autos should have had the std yokes if any applications did, but then Gary's the diff guru here, not me...

I am looking to beef up the rear end on my '75 and mine has the straps. Does anyone know where to obtain the stronger caps? Also, does the main driveshaft and u-joints need attention as well?

caps are expensive these days look at any vendors catalog and they run $40 EACH. Some have used the aftermarket caps as well. You're going to need more then yokes to beef up the diff.
