Default Can anyone help me with a wiring problem

My 1977 dash lights, tail lights, and parking lights don't work. The fuse blew immediately when I replaced it.
The head lights, turn signals, brake lights work fine.
I looked under the dash and the brown wire that appears to go up towards the switch and then goes to the firewall and into the engine compartment looks like it has melted the plastic cover.
I suspect that the short could have come from the right front parking lamp as the wires didn't look very good when I crawled under the car.
Is there a way to repair the damaged wire or do I have to replace with a new wiring harness? I know I can buy the harness for the lights but how about the one wire under the dash.
I don't look forward to having to rewire everything.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I'ts possible to just replace the bad wire, but the thing you don't know is if it damaged other wires when it melted. You can cut open the tape on the harness and make sure there is no other damage. It should have burnt the fuse before doing wire damage, someone may have put in a bigger fuse.
