Vettes with power steering did not have a damper. The hydraulics acted as a damper.
There was a recent thread that covered exactly which manual steering systems used a damper.
Doc Rebuild's websight says:
63-68 Steering Shock Absorber 250, 300 HP except PS.
Now what does it mean? First of all the Doc's listing would seem that no big blocks with manual steering had the shock. The base 327 engines were typically 250 and 300 HP.
My guess would be that the listing means that the shock absorber was only used on base engine Vettes with manual steering.
A further thread mentioned that the optional 327 engines (340 & 360) had 6 quart oil pans that interfered with the damper.
