Approximately how much does it cost (labor) to have a new wiring harness installed in my 77.

Depends on which harness, the underhood, interior, or front or rear lighting....actually thre are 4 of them....some years maybe even 5....

the whole shooting match will take at least 8 hours, it's a mess, even for a pro who been there....

that assumes you got a correct replacement harness....

which is something I would never do, but each his own....

Well, I guess I don't know which one I need. I'm having problems with my radio and windows. My mechanic can't find the problem. The wiring looks pretty old and crappy so I thought replacing it all might be best.

Sounds like a fuse in a switched hot accessory line, check them all in the fuse block, and while under there look real close with a good flashlight at the overall condition of the fuse block assy, they get wet and rust out over years....then they get hottern' hell and can melt wires...saw one the other day '78 vette, wires melted about3" up from the block crimps....super PIA, but you really don't need spend 80000 bux for a new harness, just replace the fuses/block but you on your own with that one, I dunno anyone selling any easy use setups for replacing the stock one with similar....

lemme know if I don't spot this thread....

As odd as it sounds check the yellow pages for listing under automotive electrics. These guys/shops are usually pretty sharp and will give you an estimate up front.

Dash harness is a PITA. If the wires to the windows and door locks are just chewed up you can buy them separately and cut and splice them in.

I bought one off ebay the other day, its pretty good except its backwards on one page(full color layout). Doc Rebuild has some good ones, I dont know if he's done one for a 77 yet, I am still waiting for one from him for my 78. There was also another thread in the tech section where a guy will email you one for your year car for free.

I got the diagrams for my 74 from him and they are great. Nice part is that you can print them off and use a pen or highlighter on them, throw them out when you are done, and just print new ones the next time you need them.

Definitely get a good wiring diagram, and be prepared to remove the entire dash if you want to do that one. I just finished dash and engine harnesses on my '77, and it was almost exactly no fun at all.

Be slow and methodical, and keep the old harness in place so you can map what plugged in where. Good luck!

Ok, this is going to be something looming on my horizon soon, as well...so I have to ask....which dash and engine harness did you go with, and did you do it with the engine still in the bay, and if not, do you think doing it with the engine in the car is possible? Oh, and lastly, I want to move my fuse box to a new, human hands friendly place...is that possible without going all out bubba on it?

I think I got 'em from Ecklers - just make sure you have the riight one for your '77 - mine had the alarm in fender, and having looked at it, getting the wrong one would be a real no-go. The engine one was a lot easier than the dash - mostly just a case of stripping out the old wire and routing/plugging in the half-dozen or so plugs, and I was able to do it without pulling the engine. The trickiest part by far was hooking up the starter, but that's just a matter of time, patience, some jacks and a good flashlight.

The dash harness, however, was a complete PITA. The original wiring was wrecked, so I had to completely remove the dash and interior to replace it all. The harness includes the fuse box, which plugs into the forward wiring and engine harnesses through the firewall, and is fiddly to get in place. I would be stunned if the fuse block could be moved somewhere where normal humans could access it (without lots of crazy bubba wiring), as it's pretty much the terminating end of the harness. However, should you achieve it, I'd love to know how...

Anyway, I have no idea what I'm doing under the hood, and I was able to do it in a couple of evenings. Go slow and careful, and you'll be fine...
