Default '73 Fuel pump problem or not??

'73 350 4spd. This has just started and not all the time. Car runs strong and fine thru the gears until I get it around 3300 RPMs in 3rd and 4th only and I'm in the 4 bbl. Then it feels like it's starving for gas and starts missing to the point where it almost goes dead, in fact yesterday it did die as I was driving at normal speed and normal conditions. The aggravating part is today I drove it and it didn't do it and believe me I tried to make it happen so I have no consistency with the symptoms.

I have checked timing, vacuum lines, accelerator pump appears to be working as it should, fuel filter has been changed, the sock in the new gas tank is clean, new gas, new plugs, wires, and the distributor cap has recently been changed. I'm down to is it the fuel pump unless someone else has some other idea of what to check.

Is the "S" shaped hose at the fuel pump in good shape? Could be colapsing and starving for fuel.

Default 73 fuel pump

It appears to be but it does look a little old. I'm going to replace the pump and both lines. I hate to throw money and parts at it but without the problem being consistent I'm out of ideas. Thanks for the reply.

Default Weak hoses can collapse.

Chuck, a weak hose can collapse under high RPMs. The low pressure (vacuum) in the hose during high fuel flow demand can cause a weak, soft hose "pinch" or compress closed resulting in a significant loss of fuel flow. Air can also enter the fuel flow during high demand through weak hoses (holes or cracks), looses fittings, and connections. Any of these things may cause the symptoms you describe. Check your fuel pump for fuel leaks from the internal diaphram. It is designed to leak through a weap hole in the pump housing. Hope this helps bro.

Fuel filter at inlet to carburetor is likely clogged, common problem in the springtime. This is the filter INSIDE the carb inlet.

Default 73 Fuel Pump or not

Guys, wanted to follow up with you and let you know what cured my problem. Fuel pump was tired and bad hoses. Replaced with new pump and installed the S hose and return line. Car has no more hesitation and seems to start a little easier.

Thanks for all the help.
