Default Steering Shaft Rack and pinion conversion question

All,

I have another rack and pinion conversion question. I hung my rack and set up the steering linkage and noticed that there is a bit of play in the steering wheel due to side to side and up and down movement of the steering shaft coming through the firewall, it appears the bearing where it exits the firewall is pretty wore out, considering I have 222,000 miles on my 81 this should be no surprise. So it appears that the shaft would rather move side to side before it turns creating slop in the steering wheel. Has anybody else experienced this? I would hope that when this arduous and expensive project is over I will have very tight steering?

I appreciate the help.

The bearing should be snug, however mine is not, but been that way for decades now....it was that way when I bought the column, I don't seem to have an issue with it....

but if you doing a kit like Steeroids, maybe you need to be concerned, I honestly dunno....they use 3 universal joints, I only used two...

with 3 universal joints it looks like it is pretty important as the shaft would rather move to one side of the other before it turns. Just ordered a new bearing from the local vette shop.
