Default 78 hood insulation

I Want To Replace The Hood Insulation On My 78. Is It Worth Paying The Extra Bucks For The Original Gm (molded) Pc. Or Are The Cheeper Repo Flat Ones Just As Good? Is 78 Thru 82 The Same.

Cheaper ones are not as good. They rub the paint off the air cleaner lid because they are not molded.

Any GM parts counter can order it for ya. List price is $200!!!!! Depends on the parts guy. I paid $120. Part no. 472800. One day wait, no shipping.
Keep in mind some of the venders sell it, but their shipping is high as it comes in a BIG box.
Peel off the fabric for a "correct" look.

I am an original owner of a 79,the insulation that came with the car was not molded, just a peice of fibergalss insulation held to the hood with barb spikes glued to the hood and round slip on retainers, kind of like a flat washer. Not sure if the 78 was different then mine.Later Geno

Very similar to my original...materials are better IMO...and I think it is for noise...not heat...

Edit: I just checked ZIP..they have same mat now for $35....(not available when I got mine from GM...)

Just an FYI on the one from ZIP. I bought one from Corvette America and it measures 38 inches long. If you notice Rich's engine compartment he still has the original air intake therefore the insulation only covers about 1/2 the hood. 38 inches from the top will bring you near the radiator and air intake. Dont know if anything will be crushed if you dont cut this insulation.
I'm sure a more expensive piece is better quality wise.

The one from Zip doesn't look correct at all. I got one of them that 's tucked back into the box cause I went ahead and bought the expensive one. Simply a flat piece of fiberglass. I ended up turning it over, black side showing instead of green(i think) and totally recutting it. Like mentioned above, it was way oversize for 78-79. Still didn't like it.
I'll post pics of the original and current one side by side shortly.

Great...can't remember exactly how my old one looked...just vaguely recall as took it off long before replacing it...

I left fabric on as did not want pieces falling on engine again..also,these things are a dirt collector..vacuum mine occasionally...

KapSA, thanks, I got mine from the Chevy dealer last year and didn't know the fabric wasn't supposed to be on there. Mine looks just like Rich's and the fabric is actually peeling a corner or 2. I will just peel it the rest of the way off now. BTW, I paid I think less than $100 for mine, but I have a good in with the parts guy.
