My trans has a pigtail coming off of it with a connector on the end. Do I need something special or can I just plug this into the reverse light plug which my auto trans shifter plugged into? The only reason I don't just try it myself is I forgot about it and put the console back together. I don't want to take it apart for a dry run.
I believe it should be the same. The 4-speeds have a backup switch extension harness that connects in the console where the automatics do. There are four leads, two heavy duty (yellow and purple) and two lighter colors (think it's green and red). The yellow and purple leads thread through the dash to the clutch switch, and the red and green connector (right angle) plugs into the backup light switch leads from the tranny.
If you're interested in a backup extension harness, PM me as I have an extra that is brand new and don't particularly need.
So I do have to have the extension harness? My trans only has the green and pink wires on it. Are the yellow and purple part of the clutch safety switch, if so can I just deep six that carp and run without it? I know to push in the clutch when I start it and nobody else drives it.
Coming out of the firewall on drivers side is a 2 wire connector (pink and green wires) that the switch from the trannie plugs into. See it in the middle of the rats nest in photo below? The other end of this pigtal connects to the harness coming out of the center console (second pic). Silver Shark is correct in that you need to connect the to harnesses together.
Yes, the heavy purple and yellow wires go to the clutch safty switch.
I was thinking of bypassing the clutch safety switch by completing the circuit. Would this work? Also I was thinking of running the wires from the trans up through the console where the auto shifter cable came through and then plugging in where it did.
Justin - you have a harness that attached to the auto shifter with 2 connectors. The pink & green wired connector was for the back up lights and the other connector is for the neutral safety switch. You can get the neutral saftey extension harness from Lectric limited.
On the back up light, I was going to trip and connect it from the console thru the boot to the tranny.
So I take it the clutch saftey circuit has to be closed to allow the car to start, right? I'm just going to rig up the reverse lights through the boot most likely.
