I'm defintely going to need a better than stock starter for my '68. I'm running a 327 with 10.4:1 compression with 18* initial advance.
Sometimes I just don't think she's gonna start when she's hot. What are you guys running?
Damn. That sounds almost too good to be true. Are you using this starter Matt? This sounds a little concerning to me. How can it be used on any Gen I flywheel or flexplate?
A FEW PEOPLE IN THE PAST HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THE STARTER GEAR BEING TO CLOSE TO THE FLYWHEEL, AND HAVE HAD TO ADD THE FRONT PLATE SHIM, NOT THE BOLT SHIMS, BUT THE LARGER SHIM THAT'S BENEATH THE FRONT MOUNTING BLOCK, AS THIS MOVES THE STARTER MOTOR BACK AWAY FROM THE FLEX PLATE. WE HAVE ADDED THESE SHIMS AND GEAR SPACERS TO THE STARTER, SO THIS SHOULD NOT NEED TO BE DONE.

I don't have one yet but I plan on ordering one for my 405. I have seen more than a few guys on the forum with these starters and all have been very happy with it.
A good stock one should work...but if you just want something else, the GM mini starters off late model stuff works well. I have one of the basic Summit ones on mine. It starts my 540 just fine and has for 6-7 years...even with lots of initial and on hot days. Has never let me down.
I have a Powermaster from Summit that has been excellent. It did have a solenoid failure. Powermaster repalced it at 2 years old with no hassle. I also have their 100 amp chrome alternator and has been excellent too.
I run a stock HD 396/427 starter sold by Walts Auto Supply Dearborn Mi, to crank this L88 engine.. These are built correctly and work as new or better. It can not be compared to any other brand of starter except a new Delco. And it is not a MINI. but the new small Delco is also available with the same qualituy built to crank anything. This is a NO statement. 300/600 HP and more is no problem...

I agree with Wally - the small Delco starter is a great part. It looks like a small version of the stock starter, not like the aftermarket-type starter illustrated above.
