Finding Power is Pistons
OK so a flat top piston is a flat top piston and there shouldnt be a lot more to it than that. But like everything else, I seriously doubt that this is true.
Where can I find power in pistons, and if I am only going to buy 1 set and lets say that within reason money is no object where should I look?
Jegs has a graph from Mahle saying that their pistons are the best.
What makes for a good piston?
Since I have more time than money, I am not afraid to over analyze the issue.
Forged are the best piston but custom forged are better being made lighter than many stock production styles. And weight is critical in swinging pistons around inside the engine. Also you cant beat compression if necessary.. Supercharged pistons are normally made with out domes as the blower handles that by pulley changes. Where to look? Go to the National Dragster newsletter and look in the back advertisers for piston companies. Your best bet is there...
2618 or 4032 aluminum (I am leaning towards 4032)
Gas ports
weight
ring package
Valve relief depth
Where the top ring is in relation to the top
"Anti-detonation grooves" whatever they are
Ring tension as it relates to gas ports
Coatings (not afraid to throw swaintech some money)

My main concern is that 2618 aluminum supposedly expands more as it heats up requiring more piston to wall clearence, and can be noisy when cold. I am not running killer compression or boost, so the increased elasticity probably doesnt concern me as much.
