Default Which fuel line is the feed?

Getting ready to put the motor back in and break-in the new cam this weekend.

Since the car has been empty on gas for over a year, I wanted to use a vacuum pump to get the gas through the fuel line to the fuel pump. I figure if I get fuel to the pump and fill the carb with fuel prior to startup, I shouldn't have a problem with fuel during break-in.

There are two lines to the fuel pump, I'm assuming one is a feed and the other is a return. Which is the feed, the bigger or smaller? I'm guessing the larger one, but want to be sure. Car is a 78.

Bear with me, probably a few more stupid questions coming before the weekend....

Thanks.

The larger diameter line, probably 3/8", is your main line.

However, being that this is a fresh build on an empty fuel system, the extra few seconds it takes for the fuel to reach the carb might be a good thing. The low RPM turning will help pump oil into the system and lubricate things a bit before the startup.

Once the engine starts, and things start spinning fast, you'll want as much oil flowing as possible.

Thanks.

We plan on priming the system (oil) with the correct tool until we see some oil come out of each pushrod to make sure we get pressure real quick when it fires.

Man, doing this once gives you a real appreciation for the General being able to do it over and over without issue. These things may have had quality issues, but it really could have been so much worse....

I don't think you need to pump gas up before you start the engine but if you do, don't use a vacuum pump with an electric motor on it. Major fire hazard.

Thanks, was planning on using my mityvac hand pump. Be a shame to torch my car and a friend's garage.

I think the fuel tank sits higher so gravity would help a lot. The main thing I always do it make sure the bowls on the carb are full of fuel before you start. This should give the rest of the system enough time to catch up. good luck and make sure you got EOS in there.
