Default alignment

So I had my alignment done and it's still pulling to the left, less then before but I still need to hold the wheel. Oddly enough my co-worker mentioned that he noticed my rear body mounts are in rough shape. Says that it's causing the vehicle's body to lean to one side and that is causing the vehicle to go off to the left. Anybody heard of such a theory?

Thanks,

Kevin

Hey, Kevin there are a LOT of things that can make a car pull. AS a retired Brake & Front-End man I can tell you that the rear can DEFINITELY affect how the front steers.

Look at a CAT grader or large land mover; lots of them use the rear wheels to steer.

Several things to check:
  • Condition of the front end
  • Condition of the Power Steering System
  • Condition of the tires
  • Spring Sag
  • Tire inflation
  • Experience of the alignment tech (relates to #1)

If he just wanted to flag his 1.2 hours' labor time and not check the car for problems, it could need bushings. Bushings in the control arms affect caster & camber readings. The car should have less than a half-degree caster difference between left and right sides. A car will pull to the side that has the LEAST amount of caster.

TIRES: Swap the two front tires. If it pulls the other way, then it's a tire problem.

Spring Sag: Measure the FRAME at four equal points, down to the ground Front left, Frt right, etc. Don't measure the wheel wells because the body may sag too. If the frame is the same height all the way around (even) that's a good thing.

Start with these things and let us know what happens.

Roads are sloped to the right for rain drainage you know. There may be a tad bit of "holding the wheel" steady or slightly to the left to keep it from wandering off the grade into the right ditch.

I don't think weight issues from a bad body mount would cause a drift, most likely you're experiencing road crown (or a bad alignment).

Kevin, the place that aligned it, did they give you a print out of what the vehicle alignment looked like? I got a nifty one a the dealer that listed all the tolerance and measurements before and after here:

I was quoted $89 and it ended up costing $66 after they found that the rear was not doable do to the age of the bits. I had previously replaced the front end, basically every suspension part, so that was no problem. I had this done at a STEALER (GM Dealer) btw.

Find a good GM dealer that knows Vettes and they should be able to do a good job. I think the price you were quoted is a bit on the high end. I'm replacing all my rear suspension parts and will get her aligned again at the same place.

Anyway, here is a link to my thread on the subject from about this time 1 year ago:

I had my DD aligned because of a pull to the left. Pull was still there afterwards. Ended up being the tires. Changed them and pull went away.

I did everything in this order:

1. Tires
2. Front end, ie. ball joints, tire rod ends, sway bar, all bushings, etc.
3. Wheel Bearings
4. Rotors/Brakes
5. Alignment (solved pull)
6. Shocks

If the alignment is correct with the old tires and it still pulls swap all 4 wheels from side to side and it may cure problem. It cured mine. Dave

Like Chris says, Power Steering.
Jack up the front end, both wheels off the ground.
Start the car. You'll see the wheels slam to one side.
PS Valve is VERY easy to adjust. Look it up!
