Last time I did ours. I used a pair of vise grips, and pinched the line off before the pump. You are still going to spill some fuel that in in the line. Make sure you have a pan, and do not use a trouble light near the fuel spill. I use a rechargable LED light when working on fuel areas.
You can also drain the tank, but thats a lot of work, the choice is yours.

Anytime I have to remove the pump or work with lines beyond that point, I always pinch the rubber lines off coming into the pump with needle nose vice grips. I then disconnect the line at the pump going to the carb and let the gas drain back into a container before completely removing the line. If your rubber connecting lines are older and brittle, you may not want to pinch them for fear of cracking them.
