Be sure to check the hoses going to the charcoal canister on the drivers side. I had the same smell and when I inspected these hoses, they looked OK from the top, but the constant heat cycling and the fact that they cross the driver's side exhaust manifold (should be routed through a bracket on back of alternator with a slight downward slope) made them very brittle and they had actuall developed leaks on the lower side.

Seemed to fix it for me.

I agree with others there should be no strong gas smell. I've owned other cars from the 60s and 70s, and they never had this kind of smell. If every car in an underground parkade had this smell it would blow up. Gotta be vapour escaping or a leak.

I think I got a new part from Zip. $50 if I remember correctly. I changed it without taking the tire off, it is tight but doable. Good Luck

I had a strong smell on mine. The float on my carb wasn't working right, so lots of gas flooded the carb after it was shut off. I had it rebuilt. I think it is cured, but just recently reinstalled, so I'm not 100% sure it fixed the problem yet.

Let us know what happens with yours if you find the source.

What's a"fuel vapor" seperator? I have a part to the left of the filler neck that's made of brass that's threaded into the gas tank.....is that it?

It's sandwiched in between the line going to the charcoal canistor and fuel sender

Looks like a simple brass fitting....I'm scared bubba may have been in there

It allows gas vapor to escape the tank to the charcoal canister but does not allow raw gas to do the same. I purchased a new one from Paragon. It's attached to the drivers side of the gas tank.

I'm thinking it's something different on an 82 because I don't have one. But I bet that brass fitting I have is some sort of check valve and I have it installed backwards.

I know in 82 you still had a charcoal canister. From what I understand during operation gas vapors from the tank are fed directly to the engine...during non operation the canister would store any vapors for use during next start-up. Whether you have some sort of separator or not I don't know.
