Default C3/C4 Dana 44 Question

My 81 still has the factory aluminum Dana 44 in it, and I have been planning to swap in an earlier iron housing (since it will bolt up to the stock batwing) with 4.11 gears. I understand the C4 Dana 44 is much beefier, but requires lots of modification to bolt in the whole thing. Is it possible to bolt the 84-up Dana 44 center to the earlier 80-82 batwing? It would seem that any fabrication would be minimal, if it will at least bolt up there. I'll probably go the early route (KISS), but just wondered if anyone had done this and what was involved.
