Default stuck power steering cylinder

I'm replacing all the power steering parts in my 76 but I'm stuck because the cylinder won't detach form the linkage. I took off the cotter pin and the castle bolt and have been using a ball joint seperator to wedge the liinkage and cylinder apart. It started to seperate and its all wobbly and feels like its going to fall off but it seemed to stop and it won't budge. Anybody have any suggestions? Am i doing something wrong?

It doesn't sound like your doing a thing wrong. Wish I had a tip for you other than to say keep whacking at it. Might want to try spraying some liquid wrench or equivlant on it. It can't hurt. Mine pretty much just popped off with a few good whacks using the ball joint seperater as you are.Good luck. Let us know if you get it off.

I just redid my 82. I used a pitman arm separator that I bought at autozone. It was just the right size to fit between the little sweet spot between the frame. You leave the castle nut on a few turns, put this separator on with the turning bolt thru the castle nut. Turn the adjusting bolt with a 3/4 wrench (very tight but doable) and !PoP!; dropped down and out very easy. I will post a pic later.

Also, a BFH really helps. I've used a claw hammer before when that's all I had, but a mini sledge makes a huge difference. Also make sure you're using the right size pickle fork, that it hasn't bottomed out on the tie rod.

I used an air powered impact hammer with a pickle fork to break apart all my suspension parts. Worked like magic.

wow thanks for all the great info. I love you guys your all so helpful. Anyway I think I found out why the cylinder and linkage aren't coming apart. I'm not sure what its name is, but that bolt that is supossed to be lodged inside the linkage attatchment end of the cylinder, that is seperating from the cylinder and is staying stuck inside the linkage. So i guess i'm just breaking the cyliner instead of detatching it. Any suggestions for that problem?

This tie rod end & pitman arm puller for compact cars by OEM (sold at autozone) will release the CV bolt from the pitman arm. I think you are asking for more problems if you continue to beat on the pitman arm.
