Got all the bellhousing bolts out, but I cannot for the life of me get the block separated from the bellhousing. I've got about a 1/4 inch space all the way around between the bellhousing and the block, but the engine will not budge any further.
What am I missing here? This engine pull is turning into a real PITA....
Sometimes it's easier to pull the engine and tranny together. I would recommend taking a 30 minute break and coming back for a fresh look. Could be linkage, harness, etc. Once the engine is out I recommend pulling the tranny and reinstalling as one piece. Good luck.
4 speed or automatic? There are 6 bell housing bolts. Is the engine in the car? You may want to jack up the front of the transmission so that things line up straight.
It's a 4 speed, and the engine is in the car. I've got all the bellhousing bolts out, it just won't separate. I'll try bringing the trans up a little higher to see if that helps.
Not be goofy here but you do have the lower inspection cover off also? Sometimes the input shaft can hang up some in the pilot bearing too. Try pushing on the clutch pedal sometimes the push from the release bearing pushing the clutch froward will break things loose. Good luck.

Pushing the clutch may free it. Some blocks have pilot holes in them where dowels on the bellhousing fit. Make sure the tranny and engine are level with eachother then seperate keeping them level. You could have things cockeyed. Try raising the rear of the tranny and pulling.

Did you remove the starter? It maybe hitting the motor mount on the frame. Just guessing now
Personally, I've never seen anyone use this procedure with a manual trans. Automatic, yes. But with a manual, I've always pulled the trans first and pulled the bellhousing with the motor.
Just me, but I hate pulling the motor/trans together, especially on a Vette. But like I said, that's just me.
I got it, and feel like somewhat of a dumbass. My bellhousing had 7 bolts instead of six, and guess what was keeping me from separating the block and the bellhousing...yep, the 7th bolt. It was hiding under 30 years of dirt and grease. Motor is out now. Thanks for all the suggestions.

With a 7th bolt, how was there a seperation of a 1/4 " all the away around???
I forgot how many bolt holes there were in the block but where does the seventh bolt go? Are there not 6 holes for bolts and 2 for dowel pins on the bell housing? Total of 8. Thats all I recall

There was a separation of 1/4 inch around the top and all the way down one side...the bolt I missed was the one right behind the starter on the side. I guess enough of them were out to allow the gap, but the one I missed was holding that side in place.
I don't know what is up with my housing, but in addition to the 2 holes for the dowels, there are 7 bolt holes. I will look again to be sure I'm not crazy.
