Default "thud" from the rear

I’ve recently developed a “thud” noise when launching hard off of the line and at the 1-2 shift. I read on Toms Differential website that this can be cured be installing a couple of aluminum disks at the rear crossmember cushion points. Does this stuff work & how hard was it to install? Thanks.

you probably just lost the cushin... it stops the diff from rocking forward and backward, making a knock against the frame... that should be it... though i guess you could have a loose ujoint thats twisting, but that would be a vibration, not a knock

Depending on the type of "thud" couldn't this also be a u-joint ready to bite the dust?

The front Diff rubbers (over the pinion Ujoint) do go bad.
There is a top and bottom one. The top one (the one you can't see easily)
compresses and allows movement which can cause a thud.

I would check all ujoints and all differential mounting rubbers.

I agree that accelerating from a stop and hearing a thud or thunk can be the forward differential bushing. If you have an AIM it clearly shows this. This is a fairly easy fix and can take about an hour. Do a search on "differentials" and see if you can pull up the recent thread on this discussion.

LOL, I tried searching on thud, thunk, thump before posting this thread. I knew there was a recent thread on this subject. I'll try searching on "differential". Thanks.

The sound is not like a bad u-joint. How can I describe it ..............hmmmm............Its more like the sound that GaragedwellerII's head whacking a plastic bumper would make, only more solid like :D

I test drove a 76 automatic car back in 1996 with that problem. When put in reverse from park there was nothing but from reverse to drive or from park to drive there was a metal on metal thunk. I knew exactly what it was without even getting under the car to check.

Front diff. mount. Mine had the same thud till I replaced it (the mount not the thud).
