What's This?
on a 78 what is the little unit that is hooked into the middle of one the heater hose? it has one small wire running thu the firewall? my guess is the temp sending unit for the dash read out. I just bought a $250 set of Cool Flex heater hoses and don't want that thing stuck in the middle can I move it closer to where the hoses inter the core? and if it's not essential can I do away with it altogether?

That's a vacuum actuated valve to shut off the water flow to the heater core when AC is on. That wire is actually a small vacuum line. You can probably put it anywhere you want on the hose. Many people will put a manual valve in its place as the vacuum operated valves are sometimes ineffective.
