I might be paranoid but......I want to install a simple ignition kill switch.
I was thinking of putting a toggle switch in line with the negative side of the coil, and hiding the switch under the dash.
I know nothing is theft proof, and I am looking for simplicity-----any other ideas?
Something on your fuel pump or fuel supply would be nicer. If someone attempts to steal your car it isn't auto theft. If they move it then it is. The other thing about a seemingly succesful theft is if the engine dies not too many people are going to jump out in a parking lot or intersection to find out why.
This is easy to do if you have an electric pump, if not...
The coil would work fine though, even better if you had more than one switch.
A blinking LED somewhere highly visable might help and not cost anything.
A less convenient but affective method is to remove the coil to distributer wire. Only for those rare times.
If you have an HEI, splice wire between distributor and ignition. Install toggle switch. Car will not turn over until power restored from ignition to distributor. Cost about $7.00.
Someone could watch you throwing the switch; I use a Sears Die Hard Security Battery. There was a post within the last couple of months that they might be recalled or pulled off the market, but I haven't heard anything since. It's a great product and it works exactly as advertised. The only drawback for use in a Corvette is that the alarm isn't loud enough to overcome the location down in the "hole".
This is exactly what I have done. Would take someone awhile to figure it out and I think amateurs won't have the patience. Combined with a club or something similar...it will eliminate some thefts. A pro or someone really determined can defeat virtually any device.
1) You could put a kill switch in line of positive wire going to distirbutor...the car will crack over but will never start! 2) You could put a kill switch in line of factory neutral kill switch...the car will not even crank over! :D
