Here is what's up my Tach will not go any higher then 4200 RPM and it will hit 4200 RPM and just stay there. It works fine for anything below 4200. Yes the engine will keep on increasing in RPM even after the tach stops moving. What could this be? Is it possibly time to replace the 22-year-old tachometer circuit board?
The tach in my 79 had a mind of it's own. It went all eratic until it warmed up. The circuit board had a big black spot on it. Never tried to fix it, but i'm sure that would have done it. Here's a picture I just took of it.
That's another thing it works fine in all temps. I don't want to really take the tach out on replace the board and then find out that’s not the problem.
That is the exact same spot where I have a dark spot on my tach board. There is another post where I am asking about why my tach just quit on me. I have the replacement and will be putting it in Saturday. Makes me feel better that that is the problem. And, it is what the instructions said - 95% of all tach problems are a bad board.
Looks like replacing the board is real easy - unscrew the several nuts, put the new board on, put nuts back on.
