i cannot see any numbers on the block.. so i cannot eliminate it that way.. what i do know is the altenator and ac and stuff dont look like those i have seen on other 350's
on top of that, i have a haynes manual and was reading about power steering pump removal which i just did.. it says i have to remove the alternator brackets and stuff in order to remove the PS pump if it is a 454. with 350, im just supposed to be able to remove the bolts and go..
i guess what im askin is, on a 350, (79 vin/80 front end) does the alternator sit on the driver side, directly above the PS pump, where you kinda have to fanagle the PS cap off to fill it.. and does the AC sit on the passenger side? or do i have a 454 sittin in my engine compartment, all unaware of it?
would a 454 sit in there and me not know the difference? i thought 454 were pretty big in comparison..
am i crazy???

That sounds exactly like the 350 sitting in my '80.....
damn... guess im a 350... that exhaust port thing is an awesome and REALLY quick way to tell
That's an easy fix. Pull the engine, and sell it. Buy a GenV or GenVI 454 from a truck or SUV and slap a carb manifold on it. They are roller engines. Change the cam, widen the exhaust, and spin the wheels to elongate your smile.

If he can't tell a Small Block from a Big Block I think this is a little over his head.
i can tell a big block from a small block, but when the book says one thing, and your looking at it....
anyways, i dont even think the engine is close to a 79... i think it a 68 (at least the power steering pump is) i found that out today when i went to swap 'em at autozone...
i really need to pull the ac and get the numbers off this thing
so ive got 79 vin#, with 80's front end, and a 68 power steering pump.. horray for me!

sometimes you just have to scan thru the remarks to find your answer. But as stated, most here are very helpful, glad you now know it's a 350ci

the front number 74007354 does that match your vin?
i can absolutely not find the front pad. the front number i found was on a mounting bracket for the ac.. i work a 12 today, so when i get home tonight, ill take a look behind the distributor. ive got no tags or inspection, so i cant take it to the wash and degrease it, but ill find it (i hope)!!
on the front though.. its just not there. the motor was definately repainted, and they might have knocked it off.
The word big is pretty relative. A 5.7 liter is referred to as a "big" engine where i come from, a 454 ? Well i guess that would be called a monster engine...
Don't laugh at him, when I saw my first vette, i had to look very good to make out the difference, but finally the exhaust port spread is a real easy way.

The pad is part of the block. It can't be knocked off. It is just in front of the passenger side head. It is a flat spot with numbers and letters stamped into it...unless the block was decked in which case there may be nothing stamped there because they were shaved off.
its been sitting in a garage not driven at all for at least 4 years.. so even a 454 would bog.. no to mention the previous owner did not know anything about tuning, or about mechanics in general.................. it helps to LOOK at a car once in a while.

Here is the engine stamp pad as best as I can show in a picture. Picture yourself standing on the passenger side, leaning in over the fender, and looking down at the timing cover and water pump.
