Default Removing the dash

My tac and speedommeter are dead. A couple of lights are out and who knows what eles is broke. How hard is it to get the instrument dash out to get to the speedo? I heard there is a place back east that I can send the pair to get them fixed up. Any ideas brothers?

Getting the speedo and tach gauge cluster out is a major pain in the butt. You will have to lift the upper dash pad considerably AND lower the column to get it squeezed out and even then you'll be fighting with the possibility of cracking it.

Also, reaching behind it to disconnect the speedo cable and wiring is not fun. I would suggest playing some soothing music in the garage, take your time, and keep some small old tools handy to throw when you get pissed so you don't hurt someone or something.

I have a '76. I had the column removed already but you can probably just drop it down. Disconnect the speedo cable from the back of the housing, disconnect the headlamp switch and the screws holding the drivers dash pad. It should then drop down (see picture).... The only thing I did was replace all the bulbs in the dash.
Sorry, you will also have to disconnect the vent duct system under the drivers side as well.

Good Luck,
Tab

I'd suggest hiding anything the size and weight of an alternator or larger.

Before you completely pull the dash for the speedo and tach, why not try unscrewing them at the other ends and check for operation with a drill?

You maybe could save a bunch of aggravation if they check out OK and be able to change your bulbs by just dropping it and not removing it.

For me, the installation was a bigger PITA than taking it out, mostly because of the wiring harness positioning!

When I dropped mine I decided it would be a good time to switch to LED dash lights. Don't want to do that any more than I have to!

I recently had all my gauge work, done at Corvette Instrument Service by Roger Scott. Great job and price, highly recommend.
