I have a 70 vette with standard steering column. My ignition lock will turn but when it gets to the start position it just clicks about half way into the start and nothing happens. If I pull on the key and twist it down will my other hand it will catch and not click and start the car. I have read all the good info on how to take apart the steering column and changing the ignition lock and switch. My question is more along the line of what does this sound like the lock or the switch? I don't want to tear apart the column if it is the switch or waste my time dropping the column if it is the lock. Anyone had this problem?
I am not sure if your 70 is the same as my 77 but on mine the actual ignition switch is mounted to the lower top part of the steering column and a rod runs from the ignition down to the switch and there is an adjustment on the switch to move forward or aft. Pull up Jim shea's steering papers and I'll bet there will be a picture for you.
I did read all his papers and posts but didn't find anything that would help identify the problem. To me it seams like something is broken but I am not sure if it is the lock the switch or the sector? Has anyone had this problem?
Found the problem that was not letting me start the car.
Took the Steering column apart and found it to be the "Sector Gear, ignition cylinder actuator. Mine was missing 3 teeth. Thanks for the help.
Your starter safety switch, one of the clutch of manuals, or one on the shifter for autos, may be defective/disconnected, or not activated. I'd check that circuit first before I dug into the steering column.
It is not the starter saftey switch. After I took apart the column and found the sector with 3 missing teeth I was able to start the car with the column apart (being carefull not to touch any exposed stuff) by pushing down on the switch rod and rack assembly with a small screwdriver and the car starts right up. I ordered the part and am waiting for it.
