Default Elementary Electric Choke Question

OK, This is one of those asking a stupid question is better than making a stupid mistake deals, so bear with me. With the engine off, should the choke shutter be in the open position or the closed position. I have an electric choke on a demon carb.

The choke will be closed when the engine is cold and partly during warm up. If you check with a hot engine, the choke should be wide open. And there are no stupid questions!

The choke will be wide open on a cold engine until you set it with the throttle, at which time it will snap closed. It will then open slowly as the engine warms. When the engine is at its operating temp the choke should be wide open.

OK, Question #2: Should an electric choke be hooked up to a full-time
hot or a switched hot?

You want the choke coil to be energized whenever the ignition switch is in the on position. I believe this is called "switched". If it is wired up "full time hot" the coil will always be hot. In other words you will not be able to apply the choke. This will make starting the car rather difficult, to say the least.

A good place to get 12 volts is the hot side of the windshield wiper motor.

The choke is currently wired to theswitched side of the alternator. This did not strike me as a particularly good idea. Should this be moved to the above mentioned location or is the alt. hook-up a reasonablr alternative?

What I did was buy an oil pressure sender ($17) and tap in the block right under the dist. One line goes to the wiper motor for hot and the other prong is for the choke wire. In this way if you work on your engine with the key on (not running) there will be no current to the choke because there is no oil pressure.
