Default Inner door handle (68-77)

What's the proper procedure for installing a 68-77 door handle? I've never seen a thread on the subject, and the AIM is vague. Rotating the mechanism out enough to install the handle without a handle attached is difficult.

Batman,

You are correct! You can use a flat blade screw driver to move the door opening mechanism outward enough to install the handle, then use the handle to hold it open and install the screw. That’s about the only way to do it.

That's the way I have always done it.

A way I found to make it easier was to use an Allen screw the same size as the stock screw, so it can stay on the end of a driver easier while you try to start it. The Phillips screws keep falling off of even magnetic tip drivers, so I tried the Allens and liked the results.

Or you could do what I did and break the original door handle mechanism and replace them.

Doing that has led to a rather jacked-up driver-side inner door latch assembly. Does anyone know how the factory put them together?

Also, what's the quality like on the repopped inner mechanism? My parts guy has both new ones and good used.
